THE BACK STORY
When Anahí and I first met—and were still pretending to be relaxed, easygoing travelers—we booked a little bungalow on Playa Blanca for a getaway.
We landed in Zihuatanejo, collected our bags and headed out of the airport. Twelve minutes later, we were at the beach.
Not near the beach. Not inching through a hotel zone, circling a resort entrance or surrendering the afternoon to traffic. We were standing on a long, nearly untouched ribbon of sand, with an endless stretch of palms behind us, the Pacific in front of us and almost nothing else in sight.
We assumed there had to be a catch.
There wasn’t. And we’ve been going back since, and as much as we can.
Over time, we also got to know the owner behind a small residential development built directly on the beach.
The residences are substantial—three or four bedrooms, broad private terraces and warm, understated interiors filled with wood, stone and natural light. There are two pools, a beach club, restaurant, bar and gym. But Cauma feels more like a private beachfront enclave than a conventional resort.
Most of the original residences have sold. A few completed homes remain, along with a new collection being offered in presale.
Current asking prices begin at approximately US$571,000 (MXN $9.63M). Larger options include residences around US$667,000–$823,000, all of which feels like a steal given the place is only steps from the ocean, and you can choose to either watch whales and dolphins pass all day long (or collect rental checks).
At the top end, a completed 311-square-meter penthouse is offered at approximately US $1.06M. The largest available penthouse—nearly 370 square meters—is approximately US $1.42M. Developer financing is also available.

The Three Houses We’re Dreaming About Right Now
1. Starter Family Bargain 🏡
San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato · $225,000 · 3 Bedroom Townhouse
San Miguel de Allende has become Mexico’s unofficial capital for foreigners—and it isn’t difficult to understand why. There are galleries and concerts, near-perfect weather, excellent restaurants and an improbable collection of beautiful, eccentric homes. Beyond town, vineyards and countryside stretch in almost every direction.
All that charm comes at a price. So this three-bedroom townhouse from Terracotta Homes just outside the center caught our attention. For under US$250,000, you get the comforts of a modern home, along with a shared pool, gardens and enough distance from the crowds to breathe.
We live in Valle de Bravo, another pueblo magico or magical town, that lacks the kind of clean floor plans these kinds of developments offer, along with the international flair that San Miguel has in spades, and why so many magazines list it as among the top ten small cities in the world for ex-pats to live.
2. Rare Condesa Townhouse 🎩
Condesa, Mexico City · $765,000 · Townhouse
This may look like another leafy Condesa apartment building. It isn’t. The entire four-level townhouse is one home—at least one side of it.
For approximately $765,000, this one offers 182 square meters of private space, two bedrooms, a bright living and dining room, multiple balconies and terraces, parking for two cars and a private rooftop garden with a pergola.
It sits beneath the trees on Mazatlán, one of the neighborhood’s most stately and peaceful streets—removed from the busiest tourist corners but close enough to walk to all the reasons people want to live in Condesa in the first place.
3. The Mini Hacienda 🎾
Cuernavaca, Morelos · $1.4M · 7 beds, Three Houses
Cuernavaca may be one of Mexico’s great real-estate loopholes: close enough to Mexico City for a weekend escape, blessed with its famous year-round spring weather, and filled with grand old houses that would cost several times as much in trendier corners of the country.
Quinta Una is a particularly glorious example. Hidden inside nearly two acres of gardens, the estate combines classic Mexican architecture, English-country-house eccentricity and just enough faded Palm Springs grandeur to make us want a martini.
There are four separate residences with seven bedrooms altogether, plus fountains, fireplaces, marble floors, panoramic windows, a heated pool and—because apparently we are landed gentry now—a grass tennis court.

Plenty of houses in Cabo have an ocean view. This one appears to have removed most of the sea wall so the entire Pacific can move right in.
